The Centre for South Asian Studies is hosting an event for all students enrolled in South Asian Studies courses and in the specialist, major, and minor program, and for all students/faculty interested in South Asian development/political issues.

 

The goals of the event are as follows:

·        to introduce students to other SAS students, administration, faculty, and graduate students

·        to introduce students to the new home of the SAS program: The Munk Centre

·        to get feedback from students regarding their experience with the SAS program and classes via a student survey

·        to showcase various SAS student groups, such as the newly formed South Asian Development Council, and the South Asian Studies Students Association

·        to provide more information on SAS courses, the new SAS minor program beginning in September 2010 (pending governance approval), and the SAS collaborative program

In this thrilling documentary, journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy takes a dangerous journey through her native Pakistan to investigate a militant branch of the Taliban that is recruiting young boys and challenging government rule. Join us at the screening to watch the film and have an opportunity to engage in a live discussion and Q&A session with the documentarian herself!

 

Sharmeen-Obaid Chinoy will be flying in from New York to engage in discussion with students and faculty from the University of Toronto and others who would like to attend the event. An opportunity not to miss!

About the Documentarian

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is the first non-American journalist to be awarded the prestigious Livingston Award and the youngest recipient of the One World Media broadcast journalist award in the UK. In the last seven years she has produced on 13 films for major television networks including CNN, PBS, and the Discovery Channel. Her work has earned her major awards in broadcast journalism including the Overseas Club Award, the American Women and Radio and Television award, the Cine Golden Evil Award, the Banff TV Rockie award and the South Asian Journalist Award.

 

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was the first woman in her Pakistani family to receive a Western education. She graduated from Smith College with a bachelors of economics and government and then wen on to complete two master’s degrees from Stanford University in International Policy Studies and Communication.
